NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti: The fastest GPU ever?

GTX 1080 Ti

Last week NVIDIA took the internet by storm after announcing the new GTX 1080 Ti. It is supposed to be a successor to the two years old GTX 980 Ti. But when compared side by side with the previously announced TITAN X, one can easily tell the GTX 1080 Ti is just an upgraded version of the TITAN X. The most exciting thing about the 1080 Ti is its price to performance ratio. GTX 1080 Ti is capable of delivering better performance than the TITAN X in almost half of its price.

Instead of praising it with the words, let’s focus on the numbers.

TITAN X GTX 1080 Ti
CUDA Cores 3584 3584
Texture Units 224 224
ROPs 96 88
Base Clock Speed 1417 MHz 1480 MHz
Boosted Speed 1531 MHz 1582 MHz
Memory 12GB GDDR5X 11GB GDDR5X
Memory Speed 10 GHz 11 GHz
Memory Bus 384-bit 352-bit
Bandwidth 480GB/s 484GB/s
TDP 250W 250W

The boost in memory speed to compensate for the narrower 352-bit bus gives the GTX 1080 Ti performance lead over the TITAN X. The final results are higher bandwidth and better performance. GTX 1080 Ti is clearly the winner here and will cost you just $699 compared to hefty $1200 price of TITAN X.

It will provide double the performance of the older GTX 980 Ti. The 1080 Ti is capable of delivering 40% higher frame rates than the GTX 1080. Let’s compare them and let the numbers speak,

GTX 1080 Ti GTX 1080 GTX 980 Ti
CUDA Cores 3584 2560 2816
Texture Units 224 160 176
ROPs 88 64 96
Base Clock Speed 1480 MHz 1607 MHz 1000 MHz
Boosted Speed 1582 MHz 1733 MHz 1075 MHz
Memory 11GB GDDR5X 8GB GDDR5X 6GB GDDR5X
Memory Speed 11 GHz 10 GHz 7 GHz
Memory Bus 352-bit 256-bit 384-bit
Bandwidth 484GB/s 320GB/s 326.5GB/s
TDP 250W 180W 250W

Now let’s compare the overall scores of the GTX 1080 Ti, TITAN X, and GTX 1080 based on the computing power, in game performance, graphics and performance per watt. Following are the results,

Based on the above data, it is safe to say that the NVIDIA’s latest flagship product the GTX 1080 Ti is the fastest GPU currently available in the market.

Stay tuned for the updates.
